In a small neighborhood hospital last month, 22-year-old Amlekha Baira welcomed a unique and precious addition to her family—a newborn baby girl born with two heads. The extraordinary circumstances surrounding this birth have captivated hearts and ignited a sense of hope in the face of adversity.
Weighing only about 2kg at birth, the baby girl’s arrival was followed by a swift transfer to JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur, Northern Rajasthan state, for further medical evaluation. While the newborn has yet to receive a name, she is currently under close observation at the Newborn Care Center within the hospital.
Doctors at JK Lone Hospital, led by pediatric surgeon Dr. Chetan Sharma, are hopeful and committed to the baby’s well-being. Dr. Sharma is set to lead the surgery aimed at separating the additional head from the baby’s abdomen. This rare medical condition is known as Hetropagus, often referred to as a “parasitic twin.” Fortunately, similar cases have seen successful surgical interventions.
Dr. Sharma expressed his optimism, saying, “This baby is healthy with a normal heart rate. She doesn’t have any extra complications inside or outside of her body, which increases her chances of survival. We are confident that the surgery will be successful, and the baby will lead a normal, unaffected life in the future.”
Amlekha and her husband, Ramji Lal Bairava, who is 29 years old, already have a 5-year-old son together. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented them from seeking prenatal care and ultrasounds during this pregnancy, leaving them unaware of any potential complications. Ramji Lal shared his astonishment upon seeing his daughter for the first time, stating, “When I saw my daughter, I couldn’t believe my eyes. However, I have faith in God. I hope the surgery will be successful, and my baby will have a healthy life like any other child.”
Despite their financial struggles, the family has been heartened by the hospital’s compassionate decision not to burden them with the cost of surgery and medical treatment. This gesture of support has provided a glimmer of hope in their challenging journey.
