Is Will Smith Remaking Tombstone in 2024? New Movie Rumors Explained
Will Smith, Tombstone
Rumors about a 2024 Tombstone remake starring Will Smith have been circulating widely on social media, especially over the Christmas weekend.
The original “Tombstone,” released in 1993, starred Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell and is a Western classic. The film delves into the lives of famous outlaws and lawmen from the 1880s, including William Brocius, Doc Holliday, and Wyatt Earp.
“Tombstone” holds an impressive 94% audience score and a 72% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. During its initial release, it earned a worldwide box office total of $73.2 million.
Will Smith’s Tombstone Remake Rumors Explained
A movie poster featuring Will Smith and Jamie Foxx side by side in a Tombstone remake has been making the rounds on social media.
The poster depicts the duo in classic Western attire, striking an imposing pose beside a title card that reads “Tombstone.”
Along with the poster, a synopsis of the purported Tombstone remake was included, stating that Foxx would portray Wyatt Earp while Smith would take on the role of Doc Holliday.
The synopsis further suggested that the movie is set to premiere in the summer of 2024:
“Get ready for an adrenaline-fueled ride through the Wild West in ‘TOMBSTONE,’ starring Jamie Foxx as the stoic Wyatt Earp and Will Smith as the charismatic and enigmatic Doc Holliday. As bullets fly and tensions rise, witness their epic showdown against a ruthless gang, set against the backdrop of a sun-drenched, lawless frontier. In theaters Summer 2024.”
However, it turns out this poster is fake, and there have been no legitimate updates about a remake of the 1993 movie since its release.
Will a Tombstone Reboot Ever Happen?
The possibility of a Tombstone reboot remains uncertain.
The 1993 film, led by Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, is considered a classic by many. Some fans even argue that it belongs to the untouchable category of movies when it comes to reboots, alongside titles like Back to the Future, Jaws, and Titanic.
Nevertheless, there have been attempts to create a movie reminiscent of Tombstone.
In 2021, a TV movie titled “Once Upon a Time in Tombstone,” directed by Christopher Forbes and released by ITN Films, debuted on Tubi. Unfortunately, it failed to meet fan expectations, earning only a 1.8 rating on IMDb and a solitary review on Rotten Tomatoes, which described it as the “worst thing [he has] ever seen.”
Creating a Tombstone remake poses significant challenges, as filmmakers must balance the historical events of the 1880s with the storytelling of notable Western figures involved in those events.
As for Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, both actors have busy schedules in 2024.
Smith is set to work on “Bad Boys 4,” “I Am Legend 2,” and Netflix’s “Fast and Loose.” Foxx, meanwhile, will be involved in a reality series called “We Are Family” and films like “Signal Hill” and “Tin Soldier.”
For now, fans can stream “Tombstone” on Hulu, and it is also available for purchase on major digital platforms.
